Evaluating an expression with variables - volume 1


Single variable:

Example for math expression volume 1:

Evaluate the expression 10 + x - 3 if x = 5

Solution: Given expression,

10 + x - 3

X = 5

Substitute x = 5

10 + 5 – 3 = 10 + 2

= 12.

Example for math expression volume 1 with Two variables:

A mathematical expression consists of two variables. The expression can be simplified by substituting the values of the variables in expression.

Example:

Evaluate the expression 10 + y + x + 2 if x = 3 ,y = 5

Solution : Given expression,

10 + y + x + 2

x = 3

y = 5

10 + 5 + 3 + 2 = 20.

Problem for math expression volume 1:

1) John has bought 5 kiwis and 6 bananas for $30 find the cost of banana if each kiwi is 2?

Solution:

We can write the expression as as,

5(A) + 6(B) = $30

Each kiwi = $2

So we get

5(2) + 6(B) = $30

10 + 6(0) = 30

6(B) = 30 - 10

6(B) = 20

B = 20/6 = 3.3

Therefore each banana is $3.3.

Problem for math expression: 2

Find the roots for the quadratic expression x^2 + 7x + 12.


Solution:

Given that

Quadratic expression is x^2 + 7x +1 2.

Make it into equation x^2 + 7x + 12 = 0

x^2 + 3x + 4x + 12 = 0

x (x+3) + 4 (x+3) = 0

(x+3) (x+4) = 0

The roots are x= -3,-4.

1) Evaluate the expression (1 +p) × 4 + 15 ÷ 3 - p when p= 12?

2) Solve x - 15 + 20 = 37?
