Factoring Binomials

Introduction :

Binomials are expressions with two terms being added. Numbers and polynomial terms can be formed by multiplying two or terms together. For example, 16 can be factored as 4 * 4, and x^2 + x can be factored as (X)(X + 1). Factoring is the process of turning a term into a series of simpler terms multiplied together.1x1 - 4x is an example of a binomial. (You can say that a negative 4x is being added to 1x1)

Factoring binomials methods

When there is a product of two binomials, the phrase “FOIL” can be used to help remember each combination of the expansion. A terminal expression is often times the result.

Multiply (x+2)(x-2) together using FOIL, get the final answer is  x^2-4.

FOIL is a method of multiply two binomials together. Multiply the first terms of the binomial(x and x in this case), then next the outer two (x and -2), then the inner two (2 and x), then the last terms (2 and -2), then add them all. (x^2 - 2x + 2x - 4 = x^2 - 4.).It is done once again when a individual of the binomials is a perfect square, as in this instance:x^2 - 4 = (x + 2) (x - 2)

Factoring Binomials Example

Factoring binomial Example 1:

Factor binomial are difference of squares.

Difference of squares is a binomial of the form:

a^2 – b^2

Take note that the first and the last terms are perfect squares.

Factor a difference of two squares, we will get

a^2 – b^2 = (a + b)(a – b)

This is because (a + b) (a – b) = a^2– ab + ab – b^2 = a^2– b^2

In some situation common patterns in the trinomial or binomial will help you to factor it faster

Factoring binomial Example 2:

3x^2 + 6x

Here each term has a factor of 3x, so we can rewrite it as:

3x^2 + 6x = 3x(x + 2)

Difference of Two Squares

If something of the form a^2 - b^2, we must remember the formula

(a + b) (a- b) = a^2- b^2
