In different situations we may need to find sum of x and y such that sum of x and y are equal to 4 or difference between any two variables equal to 9. Instead of describing the situations in words, we may wish to set them up in mathematical equations using mathematical operations like +, -, x, or /.The words sum, total, altogether,added,... denotes the mathematical symbol +.
