Introduction to learn online GCF
Greatest common factor (gcf) of two (or) more non zero integers , is the largest positive integer that divides the numbers without a remainder . It is simply the largest of the common factors .GCF is also known as highest common factor ( hcf).
Greatest common factor is easily explained with three words
a) Factors
b) common factors
c) greatest of common factors

Better understanding of what is GCF
a) Factor
Definition : A number may be made by multiplying two or more numbers together .The numbers that are multiplied together are called factors of the Final number .
For example :the product of 2 and 6 is 12 ; 2 x 6 = 12
so 2 and 6 are called as factors of 12
to find all factors of 12 ;; 12 = 1 x 12 = 2 x 6 = 3 x 4 so the all factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6, and 12
B) Common factors ;
Let us find all the factors of any two numbers . Let the two numbers are 12 and 18
The all factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6, 12
The all factors of 18 are 1,2,3,6,9 , 18
so now the common factors are the numbers which are in common in both the factors . The common factors of 12 and 18 are 1,2,3,6
c) greatest of common factor :
From above the common factors we got for 12 and 18 are 1,2,3, 6
greatest common factor is the factor which is the greatest number of all common factors .
In the above example 6 is the greatest of all common factors of 12 and 18 . So 6 is the gcf of 12 and 18

How to caluclate GCF of given numbers
1) list out the prime factors of each number
2)multiply those factors which are common in both the numbers . If there are no common factors then the GCF is 1
For example ; Find the GCF of 18 and 24
The prime factors of 18 = 2 x 3 x 3
the prime factors of 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
here we have 2 and 3 as common factors , so GCF is 2 x 3 = 6 . The GCF of 18 and 24 is 6
examples ; Find the GCF of 60 and 160
60 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5
160 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 5
the common factors are 2 and 5 . so the GCF is 2 x 5 = 10
Workout problems ; 1) Find the GCF of 45 and 75 Ans) 15
2) find the GCF of 225 and 625 Ans) 5
