How to do Ratios in Math

Introduction to how to do ratios in math:

In mathematics, a ratio expresses the magnitude of quantities relative to each other. Specifically, the ratio of two quantities indicates how many times the first quantity is contained in the second and may be expressed algebraically as their quotient. Example: For every Spoon of sugar, you need 2 spoons of flour (1:2). (Source: Wikipedia).

Examples for how to do ratios in math:

Example 1 for how to do ratios in math:

Divide the number 270 in the ratio 3:7.

Solution:

The given ratio is 3:7.

The total ratio is 3+7 =10.

For the number 3, in the ratio

270x (3/10) = 27 x3

270x (3/10) = 81.

For the number 7, in the ratio

270x (7/10) = 27 x7

270x (7/10) = 189

For the ratio 3, the ratio of the number 270 is 81.

For the ratio 7, the ratio of the number 270 is 189.

Example 2 for how to do ratios in math:

Divide the number 1290 in the ratio1: 3: 6.

Solution:

The given ratio is 1:3:6.

The total ratio is 1+3+6 =10.

For the number 1, in the ratio

1290x (1/10) = 129 x1

1290x (1/10) = 129

For the number 3, in the ratio

1290x (3/10) = 129 x3

1290x (3/10) = 387

For the number 7, in the ratio

1290x (6/10) = 129 x6

1290x (6/10) = 774

Example 3 for how to do ratios in math:

The members A: B: C starts a business by investing the amount Rs.1, 20,000, Rs. 1, 35, 000 and also 1, 50, 000 respectively. Their annual profit is Rs. 60,000. Find the share of each from their annual profit.

Solution:

The share of A, B, C is in the ratio 120000: 135000: 150000 = 8: 9:10.

The A’s share = (60,000 x 8/27) =17777

The B’s share = (60,000 x 9/27) =20000

The C’s share = (60,000 x 10/27) =22222
