Properties of Addition and Subtraction

Introduction to properties of addition and subtraction:

The basic operation of arithmetic is addition and subtraction. If you do math problems the basic concept is addition and subtraction. Find the sum of two or more numbers is known as addition. Finding the difference between the given values is known as subtraction. The symbol that is used for addition is plus (+). The symbol that is used for subtraction is minus (-). With the use of the properties of addition and subtraction we solve various mathematical problems. The term addition has a various type’s properties. The properties of addition are listed below, such as commutative property, associative property, distributive property, and additive identity property. Subtractive also have different types of properties, such as commutative property and additive identity property. Let we study about the properties of addition and subtraction.

Definition about the Properties of Addition and Subtraction:

Addition properties:

The properties of addition are four types. They are listed below,

Commutative property

If we add two numbers the answer will be same ( if we change the order of operand then the result will be no change ). This is known as commutative property.

For example: c + d = d + c.

Associative Property

The result will equal in both sides, when we add two or three numbers (if we changing the grouping that means there is move in parenthesis there is no change in the result) is said to be associative property.

For example: (c + d) + e = c + (d + e)

Distributive property

The result of the sum of the two numbers is multiplied with other number, and then the result of the other side is also same. (You will remove the brackets and then mutilpy, there is no change in the result). This is known as distributive property.

Example: c * (d + e) = c*d + c*e

Subtraction properties:

Additive Identity Property:

Example: c - 0 = c.

Example Problem for Addition and Subtraction Properties:

Problem 1:

If c = 5 and d = 6. Calculate the value by using the commutative property.

Solution:

The commutative property formula is c + d = d + c

Given: c = 5 and d = 6

Substitute the given values in the property

(c + d) = (d + c)

5 + 6 = 6 + 5

11 = 11

Answer: 11 (when we use the property of commutive)

Problem 2:

If c = 4, d = 5, and e = 6. Calculate the value by using the property of distribution.

Solution:

The formula for property of distribution is c * (d + e) = c*d + c*e

Given: a = 4, b = 5, c = 6

Substitute the given value in above formula

c * (d + e) = c*d + c*e.

4*(5 + 6) = 4*5 + 4*6                         (First we substitute the which is in parenthesis)

4 *(11) = 20 + 24

44 = 44

Answer: 44( when we use the property of distributive)
